This EPSU conference, on 'Services of General Interest and the European Convention', to be held in Brussels in December 2002, aims to contribute a broader vision of the reform of the Treaty to on-going European and national debates and to provide a forum for building alliances and organising demands.

The conference is one of a number of initiatives being undertaken by EPSU aimed at ensuring that the reform of the EU Treaty promotes public services. Whereas the quality of life of Europe's citizens depends on essential services - healthcare, social services, water supply and sanitation, waste and energy - the progressive liberalisation of these markets, in pursuit of competition and internal market policies,  raises a host of wider concerns over social and sustainability impacts.

EPSU organised a similar event on the "Future of the European Union and Public Services" in December 2001.
