Activity 5. 1: Decentralisation and takeovers



FOCUS

To consider the consequences of 'breaking up' an energy industry as well as privatising it

To recognise the interaction between government policies and multinational behaviour

TASKS:

Split up into groups, one each considering the energy industry in: the UK; Scandinavia; and Hungary

Each group should discuss and report on:

    • How has the energy industry been restructured?
    • Has there been privatisation?
    • Has far there been decentralisation - breaking up a single organisation into generating, grid and distribution companies?
    • What have been the consequences for trade union organisation and bargaining machinery?
    • Which multinationals have moved in, and what has been the main effects of their entry?
