Activity 4. 4: European Works Councils

FOCUS

To consider the possible uses of EWCs

To consider organisational issues connected with EWCs

TASKS:

You are a trade union representative in a multinational which has an EWC. You have been elected as a delegate to the EWC. Consider three issues:

  • (A) How can you build networks to communicate with your colleagues apart from the EWC meetings? What information do you want to share with colleagues? How do you decide what items you want on the agenda?
  1. The multinational operates in water, energy and waste management in your country. How can the unions arrange to provide EWC delegates to represent workers in these different sectors in your country?

RESOURCES:

TIME

1 hour

Note to tutors

The discussion should focus on organisational possibilities. Contact networks can be set up even without using EWCs; trade unions can create 'combine committees' to link workers in the same multinational in different sectors and locations.
