Intergen

InterGen is an international power generation company. It owns 12 power plants, with total capacity of 8146 MW, in the UK, the Netherlands, Mexico, the Philippines and Australia.

In December 2010 it was 50% owned by the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan; the other 50% will be owned by China Huaneng Group from 2011, which agreed to buy it from  the Indian group GMR Infrastructure.

Intergen was originally created by Shell UK and Bechtel Inc. to construct an IPP in Cheshire, UK, to provide cheap electricity for ICI as an alternative to the privatised duopoly of National Power and Powergen.  It then expanded internationally to create or acquire other IPPs in the Philippines, Colombia, Mexico, USA and China. It was sold in 2005 to Ontario Teachers PP and AIG Highstar Capital, except the USA and Colombia  power stations which were sold to Northern Star Generation. In 2008 GMR Infrastructure bought a 50% stake from AIG Highstar Capital.
