Cespa

Cespa is the second largest waste company in Spain. It was a joint SITA/Agbar subsidiary until sold to Ferrovial in August 2003 for EUR514.5m.

CESPA, Sufi and Vertresa (two other private operators) have begun works to transform the former Valdemingómez landfill, located near to Madrid and where more than 20 million tonnes of waste are landfilled, into a large public park. Within this project, requiring more than 72 M in investment, the partners are planning to recover landfill gas in order to supply power to the city of Madrid. In June 2001, construction work began with a landfill gas plant which will generate 1.15 million MWh over 15 years. This controlled extraction of landfill gas will prevent it being released into the atmosphere and will consequently reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The project also includes
an Environmental Information Centre, the first stone
of which was laid in November 2001. Eventually,
more than 57,000 trees will be planted on a surface
area equivalent to that of Madrids Parque del Retiro.
