Birka Energi was the result of a merger between Gullspang (IVO subsidiary in Sweden) and Stockholm Energi. Birka Energi is Sweden's largest energy company by number of customers and the third-largest by production capacity.

Following the merger (Sept 98), Birka acquired 35% of Ryssa Elverk AB and 100% of Lidingö Energi AB. Birka also established a jv with the Norwegian Drammen Energinett AS.
