The overall aim of EPSU's conference on the 'Future of the European Union and Public Services' held in December 2001, was to: 

debate and develop a strategy for taking the EU Treaty forward so as to promote public services.

The conference coincided with the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) Euro-rally, held in Laeken on 13th December 2001 at the meeting of the Council of Ministers, under the Belgian Presidency which was demonstrating for a social Europe that:

  • gurantees public services;
  • safeguards social security systems;
  • extends employee rights;
  • improves health and safety at work;
  • and combats poverty, exclusion and discrimination in all forms.
